Commission responds to CFMEU claims
7 July 2014
The Chief Executive of the Office of the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption has rejected allegations that the Commission 'leaked' information about this week's hearing into the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).
"Allegations raised in this morning's hearing by Senior Counsel for the CFMEU are rejected outright," CEO Jane Fitzgerald said.
The allegations were first raised last week in the media and in a letter to Ms Fitzgerald from the CFMEU's National Secretary, Mr Dave Noonan, on 3 July 2014.
"I wrote to Mr Noonan the next day stating that the Office of the Royal Commission has not briefed journalists about operational matters, including the forthcoming hearings in Melbourne, either selectively or at all," Ms Fitzgerald said.
"All media outlets are given equal access to the same information.
"Journalists are free to reveal the sources of their stories at any time," Ms Fitzgerald said.
